Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions

school-daysAs we move into September, our thoughts turn to educational opportunities for students of all ages. Garden flags depict symbols of education that can also be symbolic of spiritual lessons. A school bus – red and yellow, black and white – can represent the children of the world who are on a journey called life.

ABC is often used when explaining God’s plan of salvation: Accept, Believe and Confess. 1+1=2, a reminder of the power of corporate prayer as hearts, minds and souls come together in the Name of Jesus.

In Virginia, the month of September turns many hearts and minds to the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions, so befitting of Miss Alma.

Through the love of her family, friends, teachers and pastors, this energetic, outgoing child, who loved Jesus and people,  developed into a leader, encourager and woman passionate about missions and ministry.

Alma Hunt taught school, served as a principal, and Dean of Women at a  Missouri college before serving 26 years as the WMU Executive Secretary.

Miss Alma believed in the power of prayer to change the world, the course of mission history and so she voiced this prayer for us:

O God, may these women created in your own image, gifted with potential by You, chosen to give to this generation a faithful accounting of your will, be able to contribute mightily. May they move churches to see farther and to reach higher than those who have gone before us were able to do. Oh, God, help these women to give of their very best. Help them to lean heavily on You, that the years ahead may be full of Your glory. Amen.”

September Prayer Focus – Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions

Scripture: Focal verse 1 – Living Through The Presence: Psalm 140:12-13 I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. Surely the righteous will praise your name, and the upright will live in your presence.

Focal verse 2 – Used to describe Miss Alma, the teacher who never stopped teaching because God gave Miss Alma the world as a classroom: Ephesians 4:11-13 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Your gifts to the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions enable WMUV to inspire and equip women to influence the world for Christ. We hold fast to Christ’s command in scripture to live a missional lifestyle. We educate children, students and adults about missions, provide connecting points for practical mission ideas and opportunities, and offer meaningful experiences for spiritual formation. Through mission awareness and other educational opportunities women, students and children are equipped to engage in missions.

Prayer: Father, Your Word reminds us to give to You and others so that Your Kingdom advances as lives are transformed. Help me to give freely, to give generously and to give with a grateful heart. Amen.
