BGAV Ministerial Scholarship Recipient: Esther Shin

Esther Shin is a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Burke, VA. She is a student at Gateway Seminary, where she is pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership.

Esther is one of the 2018-19 recipients of a BGAV scholarship for ministerial education funds.

“I was born in Seoul, Korea, and was not brought up in a Christian home,” Esther explained.  “I grew up in a wealthy family. My grandfather was a politician as well as a businessman.”

“When I was 18 years old, our family immigrated to the United States. We were lonely and wanted to meet other Koreans. I attended church regularly and spent a great deal of time reading the Bible and in prayer. But God seemed to be as far away as ever, and there was no peace and joy in my heart.”

“I knew I was still not right with God and wondered what else I could do. As an immigrant from South Korea, I never knew I had something to share with the world,” she recalled.

“Almost 40 years later, as a 21-year government employee, I made the decision to resign to pursue my calling. In 2008, I joined the Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia staff as a Multicultural Consultant. While it’s brought its challenges, having the opportunity to travel across the country to serve diverse churches of Burmese, Chinese, Ethiopian, Ghanaian, Korean, and Latino communities has been a blessing, and I haven’t looked back once.”

About her current ministry, Esther said, “My husband and I were approved by the North American Mission Board and the BGAV as church planters. We’ve planted many churches in Virginia and in South Korea. We are working to encourage and support the second generation of multicultural churches. I am specifically focused on broadening my understanding of how to better empower women through discipleship and mission education.”

Regarding her calling, Esther explained, “The kind of ministry God is leading me to pursue is the one that led me to Christ over 40 years ago. Through multicultural women’s ministry, I hope to encourage women to explore the world of endless possibilities in Christ.”

Through Cooperative Missions offerings, the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) provides scholarships and ministerial education funds for eligible Virginia Baptist students who need aid in financing their education. BGAV Scholarships and Ministerial Education Funds can help students earn an undergraduate degree, pursue undergraduate or graduate education in preparation for vocational ministry, or access training and continuing education opportunities.

Once each month, we are featuring a current-year scholarship recipient on our blog to help our readers get to know these promising students. Please pray for them as they study and seek to discern God’s will for their lives.
