First organized in 1963, the Virginia Baptist Male Chorale is a choral group committed to providing an excellent musical experience for its members and audiences which will glorify and honor our God and share the good news of Jesus Christ throughout Virginia and the world. More than 260 men have been active members, singing more than 200 concerts in churches and other venues in Virginia and the Southeast. Robert Crute of Suffolk, Virginia, is Chorale President for 2018. The current directors are Rev. Thomas B. Ingram, traditional worship and church music minister in residence for the Baptist General Association of Virginia in Richmond, VA; and Rev. Barry Green, retired music minister of Bonsack Baptist Church in Roanoke, VA. The first conductor of the Chorale was Allen Brown, now retired. A brass ensemble, woodwinds, strings and handbells are used on occasion to accompany the Chorale, in addition to the piano and organ. The Chorale is open to all men who are full-time staff ministers in Virginia Baptist churches and responsible for the music in their own churches, or those who have served in such positions in the past. They sing a wide variety of music, including Renaissance and Baroque selections, traditional anthems, hymn-anthems, folk hymns, spirituals and contemporary songs.

Each spring and fall the group takes a short Mini-tour, singing in Virginia Baptist churches and institutions. The Chorale also sings for statewide Virginia Baptist gatherings as requested. They have also sung for the Southern Baptist Woman’s Missionary Union Convention, the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference, and the Southern Baptist Convention. On four occasions, the Chorale has sung full concerts for Church Music Week at the Ridgecrest Baptist Conference Center in North Carolina. During 2002, 20 members of the group shared in a musical partnership mission trip to Austria and the Czech Republic. The group shared in four formal concerts, multiple informal street concerts and led a four-day family music camp for Austrian Baptists. In June 2006, an ensemble from the group sang for the Italian Baptist Assemblia in Assisi, Italy, and in Italian churches in Rome, Assisi, and Rovigo. The group recorded their second CD in 2008.
