Today marks the 195th birthday of the Baptist General Association of Virginia. It was June 7, 1823 at Second Baptist Church in Richmond where 15 delegates gathered for the first meeting. Those delegates wrote a constitution with a mission statement that is still found – in essence with nearly the same wording – in our current constitution is:
“The object shall be to furnish the Baptist churches of Virginia a medium of cooperation for the propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and for the advancement of the Redeemers Kingdom by all methods in accord with the Word of God.”
For 195 years, BGAV churches have sent Kingdom Pioneers across Virginia and beyond to advance the Redeemer’s Kingdom. May we continue to embrace their pioneering spirit and continue advancing the Kingdom together!
Baptists in Virginia have a long history even before the founding of the BGAV in 1823. Fred Anderson wrote a great article titled “Three Centuries of Baptists in Virginia” that details our rich history.
Happy Birthday, BGAV!
