When our children were small, we had a nightly tradition of just telling stories, and frequently we would just make up stories with the children.

We were reading the Christmas story one night about Gabriel coming to Mary and telling her that there would be a child that would be born that would be Christ the Lord; and that Gabriel was the one that came and delivered that message and one of my children looked up at me and said, “Well, how did Gabriel get that job?” I said, “Well, really, I don’t know.” “Well, make up a story and tell us the story about how Gabriel got the job.”

So I thought about it for a minute; as I thought, it dawned on me that there must have been a great deal of excitement in heaven as God announced to the angels that he was going to send a messenger to earth and he was going to deliver a message to the Jews and he would need an angel to deliver the message.

Any kind of story like that in heaven created quite a stir among the angels; they wanted to know who would be chosen and what would be the message. And so there was a lot of buzz going on; and God said that his children had taken the freedom that he had given them and abused it; and were just creating a real mess, and he needed to deliver a message.

And so one of the angels stepped forward – an archangel named Michael who’s the commander in chief of angels of fire and destruction if you read the book of Revelation. So Michael steps forward and says, “I know exactly what needs to be done to straighten out the mess these humans have done. I’ll go down and I’ll straighten it all out in 10 minutes. We’ll wipe out the old ones and we’ll start with some new ones.”

God said, “Michael, that’s not what I had in mind.”

Rafael stepped forward, “Well, what they need, they just need beauty. I will bring art and beauty –and if they could see art and beauty, maybe they’ll recognize ugliness for what it is and change their course.”

God said, “For all the art and all the beauty, that won’t stop them from their love of sinning; that won’t work.”

Then Uriel stepped forward, “I know what I’ll do, I’ll go down and I’ll tell them we’re going to build schools and even more schools. ‘Cause what they need is education; what they need is philosophy; they need a new way of thinking; they need psychology; they need to understand themselves better; they need ethics; and they need business and they need science to cure all their ills.”

God just shook his head and said, “Uriel, education is nice, but what they’ll do with that knowledge is they’ll use it for even more destruction.

Then Gabriel stepped forth, “Lord I don’t know what you have in mind, but I think it has something to do with love.”

And God smiled and when God smiles, all of heaven lights up. He said, “Gabriel, that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I’m going to give them love and the way I’m going to give it to them, is I’m going to give them myself. You’re going to be my messenger, and I want you to go to a young lady and I want you to tell her I want her to be my partner and we’re going to have a little boy and that little boy is going to be my love to the world. And he will be the way, the truth, and the life.”

And that is how Gabriel got the job.
