The Door of Hope Ministry was begun in Johannesburg, South Africa, almost 15 years ago to respond to the growing number of infants that were being abandoned on the streets and trash heaps of the city.
Cheryl Allen was instrumental in creating a ministry and a safe place for mothers who felt they could not care for their babies. Their vision was to give a better option to mothers than just abandoning their child in some dark street corner.
That safe place became a reality and is known as Door of Hope. Mrs. Cheryl Allen now serves as the director of Door of Hope Ministry and because of this ministry hundreds of babies have received the gift of life.
A few weeks ago, Mrs. Allen spoke at the fall meeting of the Bridge Network of Churches at Atlantic Baptist Church. Cheryl’s story is always an inspirational one, but this night it was more powerful than ever. What made her story so meaningful on this night was that Georgina Smith was also in attendance.
Georgina was the first baby to be received by the Door of Hope home 15 years ago. She was the first and on this night she and Cheryl were there together thanking the Lord for this wonderful life giving ministry. Georgina is blessed with a beautiful voice and all in attendance were touched to hear from both of these gifted women.
Georgina was adopted many years ago and now lives in Virginia Beach, Va. Her parents are Roy and Shirley Smith. They adopted Georgina while they were serving in South Africa.
Roy is now the Associational Missionary for the Bridge Network of Churches and Shirley serves with Roy on the staff as well. Mrs. Cheryl Allen, Georgina Smith, Roy and Shirley were a blessing to all who were present.
Gifts to the Door of Hope ministry can be made through the Baptist General Association of Virginia.
