New Hope Church, Lorton, began working with FMSC several years ago. For this year, they wanted to pack over 5 million meals to feed nearly 14,000 children for a year. To do so, they held the event over three days at the Dulles Expo Center and hosted thousands of volunteers.
The BGAV invested $100 of Virginia Hunger funds for each BGAV church in the network, totaling over $11,000 to help with effort.
After the three-day event concluded, not only did the NorthStar volunteers meet their goal. They exceeded it. In fact, the 2016 Food Fight packed 5,044,464 meals, a FMSC record for most meals packed in one event.
To add to the excitement, the volunteers also packed 1,131,408 meals in the last round in a little over two hours, which is another FMSC record. Dee Whitten, NorthStar Church Network Executive Director, called that last round a “genuine miracle,” going on to say that “our God is a God of miracles.”
Additionally, nearly 9,000 pounds of food was donated to the Capital Area Food Bank, allowing local food pantries to provide over 7,000 meals.
