Source of Light Center: English Class – Klas Anglè

This past June, my mom and I had the opportunity to join a group going to Port Au Prince to teach English to students at the Source of Light Center. Our group used research-based methods of teaching, along with music and Bible lessons, to enhance English-speaking skills. While many of the kids already have a wealth of English words in their vocabulary, it was great to see them learn a few more and be so engaged in the lessons each day.

Source of Light Center: Sweet Dreams and Smiling Faces

In December it came to our attention that the Center was in need of some additional and replacement bunkbed frames. The need comes from a few factors: 14 more children moving in to the Source of Light over the last couple of years and the regular wear and tear that the furniture receives.

Laundry For Days

Posted: 5/17/18 at 1:15pm. Post by Kimberlee Westlake. As a mom, I couldn’t help but notice some of the daily chores at the center when I visited. The kids all seemed happy, well fed, and clean. I know that accomplishing these things can present challenges at times in my own family of five, so it made me curious as to how …

Source of Light Center: Camp de Musique

God is good and He has been on full display at the Source of Light Center (SoL) in Port au Prince, Haiti. This August, a volunteer team of musicians from the not for profit organization Now I Play Along Too (NIPAT) set out for the SoL Center in Delmas 19 to deliver instruments and teach music lessons at their annual summer music camp. NIPAT was established by the band Melodime to help provide opportunities for at-risk and underprivileged children to learn music but also with the dual purpose of building character and discipline to overcome obstacles. Learning a new instrument can be a very rigorous and challenging, yet fun process that helps define ones character. Music also has the ability to unite one another that may speak different languages and come from very different walks of life. This could not have been more apparent during this year’s summer music camp.

Day 1 in Haiti – Monday, 6/27

The first full day of our Haiti trip started early – 6:30 (which was a bit too early for me). I was tired upon arriving for the first time at the orphanage, and, quite frankly, pretty out of it; I wasn’t expecting any sort of lasting impression on the first day, especially since I was feeling this tired. Boy was …

On Our Way…

Here we are sitting in the airport awaiting our flight to Port-Au-Prince. We are pretty early so we don’t yet know how full the flight is or who will be on the flight. But, I will be totally surprised if our group of 11 is the only volunteer team on the flight. Haiti is THE destination for volunteers from North America....
