Richmond’s First Baptist Church thrives as the church home of a wide range of members including seniors, middle-agers, young adults, families, children, teens, youth, college students, singles, and adults with special needs. We also provide a nurturing space for participants in Divorce Recovery Workshop, international students, the Deaf Ministry, and Alethia Chinese Church.
Position Summary:
The Director of Stewardship and Development will be responsible for both leading and managing the external communication strategy and fundraising efforts, managing the development to tell our story while simultaneously leading initiatives to secure funding through donor cultivation and relationship building. This individual will work closely with church leadership, volunteers, and ministry teams to develop and implement strategies for fundraising, donor relations, and promoting biblical financial principles within the church community.
This full-time role will direct and be actively engaged in all aspects of stewardship activities related to our stewardship campaigns. The Director will create and implement a comprehensive communication and fundraising strategy that reflects the Church’s core values. This is an opportunity to continue building a vibrant church generosity program with a strong history of sacrificial giving over multiple generations.
The Director will partner with the Senior Pastor, Associate Pastors, Church leaders and the FBC Endowment Fund, Inc. to successfully execute this communication and stewardship plan to increase congregational giving and support for our faith-based programs and services.
Essential Job Functions: The duties listed below outline the various types of work that may be performed. We seek a Director of Stewardship and Development that can also bring vision and experience to the role that incorporates new thinking and strategy.
● Responsible for creating and implementing all development efforts, including the cultivation and solicitation of congregational and donor relationships as the active fundraiser for FBC. Work with the ministerial staff, the Generosity Team, and other lay leaders to increase our stewardship.
o Research prospects, establish priorities for solicitation, and solicit annual, major, and planned gifts
o Seek new sources of funding, including foundation giving opportunities
● Manage a balanced stewardship ministry focuses on financial discipleship and donor development.
● Normalize talking about our finances, both personal and church related, and lead the way in spiritual conversations about how God wants us to steward His resources.
● Provide consistent church-wide and external brand messaging to effectively and simply convey the mission and ministries of the church and how people lives are changed.
● Developing and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy and brand messaging in collaboration with the Minister of Invitation, across various channels like television, website, social media, newsletters, and publications.
● Monitor progress and report regularly to senior ministerial staff, business manager, and lay leadership.
● Managing media relations, interviews, and press conferences.
Qualifications:
● Professional fundraising or related experience of 3-5 years in a nonprofit organization, preferably faith-based, with demonstrated success in individual fundraising and donor relations
● Demonstrated success in a development role managing annual campaigns, capital campaigns, planned giving, major gifts, corporate giving, and foundation giving
● Ability to manage a wide variety of communications strategies (digital, media, website, television) to convey messaging on the ministries and mission of the church.
● Demonstrated ability to develop messaging through storytelling to convey of giving outcomes in support of the ministries of the church
● Ability to develop strong relationships with people from a wide range of backgrounds and across all ministry areas
● Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
● Self-directed professional with a resourceful style, the ability to take initiative and a comfort in making the ask of donors
● The capability to work both independently and as a team player, managing multiple tasks and projects
● Authentically engaged in the Christian faith
● Strong analytical skills
● Bachelor's degree required and an advanced degree is preferred
