Reports To: Church Leadership Team/Board of Deacons
Position Summary:
Main Street Baptist Church, organized in 1839, is located in the City of Emporia, in Southside Virginia. We are members of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Virginia (CBF). We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Full-Time Pastor to lead the congregation in worship, spiritual guidance, and community service. The ideal candidate will be committed to preaching the Word of God, providing pastoral care, and ensuring the administrative functions of the church run smoothly. The Pastor will collaborate with church leadership to carry out the mission and vision of Main Street Baptist Church while fostering a welcoming and spiritually nurturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
A. Worship Preparation & Leadership
Plan and Lead Corporate Worship:
Prepare and lead Sunday worship services that are spiritually enriching and biblically grounded.
Plan sermon series, organize worship elements, and select music that aligns with the church’s theology and goals.
2. Preside Over Communion and Baptismal Services:
Lead the church in celebrating the sacraments of Communion and Baptism, ensuring these services are meaningful and reflect biblical principles.
3. Officiate at Weddings and Funerals:
Officiate weddings and funerals for church members as requested, offering pastoral care, counseling, and prayer as needed.
4. Be a Resource for Church Organizations:
Support and collaborate with church committees, ministries, and leaders, providing biblical guidance and leadership where needed.
5. Satisfy Any Other Typical Responsibilities:
Fulfill other general duties expected of a pastor, such as prayer for the congregation, leading staff meetings, and representing the church in the community.
B. Pastoral Care and Visitation
Visit Church Members Who Are Hospitalized:
Offer pastoral care and prayer for members who are hospitalized, providing comfort and spiritual support during times of illness or surgery.
Visit Church Members Who Are Homebound and Those in Nursing Homes:
Provide regular visits to homebound members, nursing home residents, and those who are unable to attend services, ensuring they feel connected and cared for.
Visit Prospective Members and Inactive Members:
Actively reach out to prospective and inactive members, offering encouragement, fellowship, and opportunities for engagement in the church community.
Provide Counseling When Necessary or as Requested:
Offer biblical counseling and guidance to individuals and families in need, addressing spiritual, emotional, or personal issues in a compassionate, confidential manner.
C. Missions:
Support Ongoing Missions
Current missions include: Food Pantry, Operation Christmas Child, Bible Frogs, Young at Heart and Women on Mission (WMU)
Engage in local outreach efforts
Build relationships with community leaders and serve as the public representative of Main Street Baptist Church in the greater Emporia Area.
Foster new ministry opportunities
D. Administration/Leadership
Assist in the Administration of the Church Office, Staff, and Church Counsel:
Support church staff and ensure the church office operates efficiently. Collaborate with the church leadership to maintain proper organizational structure and management of resources.
2. Assist in Congregational Communication:
Contribute to church communications such as the weekly bulletin, church newsletter, and other correspondence. Ensure the congregation is kept informed of church activities, events, and prayer needs.
3. Attend the Monthly Meeting of the Board of Deacons:
Participate in monthly meetings with the Board of Deacons to discuss church business, upcoming events, and spiritual needs. Offer counsel and leadership during meetings.
4. Serve as Ex-Officio for Other Committee Meetings:
Serve as an ex-officio member for various church committees, providing spiritual oversight and guidance to ensure that all ministries are aligned with the church’s mission.
5. Staff and Volunteer Development:
Support and mentor church staff, volunteers, and lay leaders to help them grow spiritually and fulfill their ministry roles.
6. Ongoing Professional Development:
Continuously pursue personal and professional growth, including attending conferences, workshops, and staying informed on ministry trends.
Qualifications:
1. Education:
A seminary degree (M.Div., M.A. in Theology, or equivalent) from an accredited institution is preferred.
2. Experience:
5 years of experience in pastoral ministry with demonstrated leadership in preaching, pastoral care, and church administration preferred.
3. Skills and Abilities:
Strong preaching and teaching abilities grounded in Scripture and Baptist theology.
Compassionate, outgoing and approachable, with excellent skills in pastoral care and counseling.
Effective organizational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and lead a team.
Strong communication skills for interacting with church members, staff, and the local community.
